Back To School
When the summer smells like apples
and shadows feel cool
and falling leaves make dapples of color on the pool
and wind is in the maples
and sweaters are the rule
and hazy days spell lazy days
it’s hard to go to school

But I go!

School

School bells are ringing, loud and clear;
Vacation’s over, school is here.

We hunt our pencils and our books.
And say goodbye to fields and brooks.

To carefree days and sunny hours.
To birds and butterflies and flowers.

But we are glad school has begun.
For work is always mixed with fun.

When autumn comes and the weather is cool.
Nothing can take the place of school.

Now That I Can Read

I used to need somebody
To sit and read to me.
I’d look at every page they read
And listen carefully.

But now that I am in first grade (could change the grade level)
And filling up a shelf
With stories, poems, and other books
That I can read myself.

This Is The Fall

Grapes in the vieyard,
Purple and dark;
Brown leaves are floating
Down in the park.

Red are the apples,
Plenty for all.
This is the harvest,
This is fall.

Mr. Owl

I saw an owl up in a tree,
I looked at him, he looked at me;
I couldn’t tell you of his size,
For all I saw were two big eyes.;
As soon as I could make a dash,
Straight home I ran, quick as a flash!

On Halloween night

Let’s fly like a bat
On Halloween night.
And give all our neighbors
A terrible fright!
Or creep through the dark
Like a big, black cat.
And make all our neighbors
Cry, “What was that?”
Or float like a goast
In the dark midnight air,
And make everyone run
And hide to beware.
Then maybe tomorrow when the witching hour’s done,
We’ll give in and tell them
It was Halloween fun!

Just Wondering

What becomes of the witches on broomsticks
The day after Halloween?
Does anyone know where the gobblins go
Or why none of the ghosts are seen?
I wonder about those big black cats
And the owls that hooted at night?
I still have my jack-o-lantern
And his eyes look as wise as can be.
Now do you suppose that he really knows?
And is that why he is grinning at me?

Book Are For Looks

Books are for looks; a look for a tale
Of possibly a lion, a tiger, or whale.

A look for adventure exciting, intense
With mystery unfolding and growing suspense.

A look for a fact to inform, or relate,
A picture, a poem, or a word to locate.

You never can tell when you start to look.
What interesting things may come in a book.

A Thanksgiving Dinner

Take a turkey, stuff it fat.
Some of this and some of that.
Get some turnips, peel them well.
Cook a big squash in its shell.

Now potatoes big and white, Mash till they are soft and light.
Cranberries so tart and sweet.
With the turkey we must eat.

Pickles-yes-and then, oh my!
For dessert a pumpkin pie.
Golden brown and spicey sweet.

What a fine Thanksgiving treat!

I love poems,
Yes I do.
Read through mine,
And you will too!

"First Day"

Every one has a "First Day" when they feel sad and all alone. It can be so scary when you're out on your own. And I know that a "First Day" can be full of doubts and fears, But they're full on new beginnings. Take my hankie, dry your tears. You'll find lots of things to do and you'll probably make new friends. I promise we'll be together when the school day ends. Here comes the teacher, blow your nose and be brave. Come on and now wipe your eyes, this is no way to behave. Well good morning teacher. We really must beg your pardon. No, MOMMY doesn't always act this way. But it's my first day of .......KINDERGARTEN!!!

Fire Fighters

Fire fighters wear big red hats.
Climb up ladders to rescue cats.
Ride big trucks with big black tires.
Use big hoses to put out fires.
Race when they hear a fire alarm.

Friends at school
Are big and small.
Friends at school
Are best of all!

Way up high in the apple tree
Two little apples smiled at me.
I shook that tree
Just as hard as I could,
Down came the apples
Mmmm! They were good!

ORANGE IS A CARROT

Orange is a carrot.
Yellow is a pear.
Purple is a plum
and brown is a bear.
Green is the grass
and blue is the sky.
Black is a witches hat
and red is cherry pie!

Hello Halloween

Hello witches, Hello ghosts
Hello pumpkins on the posts.
Hello skeletons, Hello bats
Hello goblins and black cats.
Hello owls and hello moon,
Halloween is coming soon!

Turkeys in a Tree

Five fat turkeys are we
We slept all night in a tree,
When the cook came around,
We couldn't be found,
That's why we're here you see!

Thanksgiving

Thank you for all my hands can hold,
Apples red and melons gold.
Yellow corn both ripe and sweet,
Peas and beans so good to eat!
To help keep children safe from harm.
